Greater Utica Magazine Cover – October 2018 – St. John’s Church Utica NY – A Historic Look at One of New York’s Oldest Catholic Parishes

St Johns Church in Utica NY with twin spires and historic downtown street scene on Greater Utica Magazine October 2018 cover

The October 2018 cover of Greater Utica Magazine highlights the history of St. John’s Church in Utica NY, one of the oldest and most significant Catholic parishes in New York State. Founded in 1819 by Irish immigrants working on the Erie Canal, St. John’s Church in Utica NY quickly became a spiritual and cultural cornerstone for the growing community.

As the parish expanded, multiple church buildings were constructed to meet the needs of its congregation. The current Gothic Revival structure of St. John’s Church in Utica NY was dedicated on Christmas Day in 1869, replacing earlier churches on the same site. Its towering spires and detailed architecture have made it a defining landmark in downtown Utica.

With a beautifully restored interior completed in 2013, St. John’s Church in Utica NY continues to stand as a symbol of faith, heritage, and the enduring legacy of the city’s early immigrant population.
