In these present years, the settlement known as Utica rises upon the grounds once occupied by Fort Schuyler, erected in 1758 as a safeguard along the Mohawk River passage. Since the close of the late Revolution, families and tradesmen have steadily arrived, drawn by the promise of land and opportunity. What was once but a frontier crossing has grown into a village of increasing importance, formally incorporated in 1798, and now serving as a principal thoroughfare for those journeying westward.

With the great Erie Canal nearing completion, there is much anticipation that Utica shall soon become a place of considerable commerce and industry. Already, merchants, craftsmen, and laborers are establishing themselves, and the movement of goods through this region grows with each passing season. It is widely believed that this village, situated at so favorable a location, shall in time become a center of trade and enterprise, playing no small role in the advancement of this young nation.
