John E Creedon Utica NY history is remembered through the story of a Utica police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1916. Patrolman Creedon was shot while interrupting a burglary at a sporting goods store, but despite being mortally wounded, he managed to walk several blocks back to the police station to report the crime before being taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

Creedon died eight days later from his injuries, and two suspects were arrested and convicted, with one executed and the other sentenced to life in prison. Having served seven years with the Utica Police Department, his sacrifice left a lasting legacy, and today the Utica Police Benevolent Association is named in his honor, securing his place in Utica NY history.
