The September 2021 cover of Greater Utica Magazine highlights Roscoe Conkling Park in Utica, NY, a historic 385-acre municipal park established in 1909. Donated by philanthropist Thomas R. Proctor, the park was designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers firm, led by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., and remains the largest park in Utica’s Olmsted-designed system.
Created from the former Jewett farm and surrounding lands, the park was dedicated for public use in a ceremony attended by New York Governor Charles Evans Hughes. From its inception, Roscoe Conkling Park was envisioned as a natural retreat and recreational space for the growing city.
Over the decades, the park expanded and evolved into a central hub for outdoor activity in Utica history. In 1914, the Utica Zoo was established within the park, beginning with a small deer herd and growing into a major regional attraction. The Valley View Golf Course followed in 1925, later redesigned by famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr.
Recreational development continued throughout the 20th century, including the addition of tennis courts during the 1930s through WPA efforts, and the introduction of skiing in the 1940s, with a chairlift added in the 1960s. The park’s “South Woods,” known for its historic “Switchbacks” trail system, has provided hiking and skiing opportunities for over a century.
Named after Roscoe Conkling, a prominent 19th-century U.S. Senator from Utica and influential political leader, the park stands today as one of the city’s most important natural and recreational landmarks, blending landscape design, history, and community use.
