Historic crowd gathered outside John A. Roberts Department Store on Genesee Street in Utica NY during a major 1927 fire event featured on Greater Utica Magazine February 2020 cover

The February 2020 cover of Greater Utica Magazine highlights the history of the John A. Roberts Department Store Utica NY, once one of the city’s most prominent and upscale retail destinations. Founded by John A. Roberts (1844–1923), the store became a cornerstone of downtown commerce during Utica’s peak as a thriving regional shopping hub.

In 1911, the business moved into a grand new building on Genesee Street, designed to reflect the elegance and sophistication of leading New York City department stores such as James McCreery & Co. The store offered a wide range of high-quality goods and helped define the shopping experience in early 20th-century Utica.

A pivotal moment in the store’s history came on August 6, 1927, when a major fire drew large crowds and marked a turning point for the business. Just two years later, in 1929, the John A. Roberts Department Store closed its doors, signaling the end of an era for one of Utica’s retail landmarks.

The site later became home to J.B. Wells, continuing the location’s legacy as a key commercial center in downtown Utica.

This cover captures the energy and importance of Utica’s historic retail district, reflecting a time when Genesee Street stood at the heart of the city’s economic and social life. John A. Roberts Department Store Utica NY History
