Greater Utica Magazine Cover – December 2018 – Woolworth’s Utica NY – A Historic Look at the Five and Dime That Shaped Downtown

The December 2018 cover of Greater Utica Magazine explores the history of Woolworth’s in Utica NY, a name that became synonymous with downtown retail and everyday shopping for generations. The story of Woolworth’s in Utica NY begins on February 22, 1879, when Frank Winfield Woolworth opened his very first “Great Five Cent Store” on Bleecker Street.

Although this first Woolworth’s in Utica NY was short-lived and closed within three months, it marked the beginning of a retail revolution. Woolworth went on to refine his concept elsewhere, eventually building one of the most successful retail chains in American history.

The brand later returned, and Woolworth’s in Utica NY became a thriving and beloved downtown destination for decades. Known for its affordability and wide selection of goods, it played a major role in the city’s commercial life and remains a nostalgic symbol of Utica’s retail past.
