Charles Stewart Mott (1875–1973) is an important figure in Utica NY history through his leadership of the Weston-Mott Company, a major Utica-based manufacturer. Originally producing bicycle wheels, the company expanded into automobile axles and components under Mott’s direction, helping position Utica as part of the early automotive industry. By 1903, he became president and played a key role in the city’s industrial growth.
In 1906, Mott moved Weston-Mott to Flint, Michigan to supply Buick, linking him to the rise of General Motors, where he later became one of its largest stockholders. His early work in Utica remains a significant part of local history, showing how the region contributed to America’s industrial expansion.
