Historic Utica City Hall building on Genesee and Pearl Streets in Utica NY featuring its tower architecture on Greater Utica Magazine March 2020 cover

The March 2020 cover of Greater Utica Magazine features the history of Utica City Hall Utica NY, the city’s first official municipal building and a symbol of civic growth in the mid-19th century. Designed by renowned architect Richard Upjohn, the Italian Renaissance-style structure was completed between 1853 and 1854 at the corner of Pearl and Genesee Streets.

Utica City Hall Utica NY reflected the city’s emergence as a thriving urban center during a period of rapid industrial and population growth. With its distinctive tower and elegant architectural details, the building served as the heart of local government and public life for more than a century.

By the mid-20th century, changing priorities and urban renewal efforts led to the building’s demolition in 1968. Its loss sparked public concern and helped inspire the formation of local historic preservation movements dedicated to protecting Utica’s architectural heritage.

The current city hall, completed in 1967, replaced the original structure, marking a transition into a new era for the city while leaving behind a lasting legacy tied to its historic predecessor. This cover captures both the grandeur of Utica City Hall Utica NY and the broader story of preservation, change, and civic identity in the Mohawk Valley.
