New York Mills NY history begins in 1808 when Benjamin Stuart Walcott established cotton mills along Sauquoit Creek, creating one of the Mohawk Valley’s earliest industrial communities. Built as a company town, the village quickly grew around textile production, attracting workers—many of them European immigrants—who helped shape the cultural and economic identity of the region.

New York Mills NY history continued to expand through the 19th century as the mills became known for producing high-quality fabrics. The village was officially named in 1840 and later incorporated in 1922. By the early 20th century, it was a thriving industrial center, though labor strikes in 1912 and 1916 reflected the challenges of factory life. With the decline of textile manufacturing in the 1950s, the mills closed, marking the end of an era but leaving a lasting legacy in Mohawk Valley history.
