More Than Just a Meal: The Home-Cooked Legacy of Charlie’s Place

There are certain restaurants that feel less like a place of business and more like an extension of your home. They have a quality that can’t be described—something you feel the moment you walk through the door. Since opening Charlie’s Place on Seneca Turnpike in Clinton twenty-four years ago, Karen “Charlie” Knauth has achieved exactly that.

From Howard Johnson’s to Seneca Turnpike Karen’s journey in the food service industry started early. Growing up in Utica, she watched her mother work at the former Hartford Queen, eventually taking her first job at seventeen as a waitress at Howard Johnson’s in North Utica. After eighteen years of learning the ropes, Karen began searching for a place where she could finally chase her own dream.

She found it at 8170 Seneca Turnpike. The building needed work—the dark, dreary browns and yellows had to go—but Karen saw the potential. She transformed the space into the bright pink and teal landmark it is today, doing all the cooking and managing herself in the early days.

The Menu: Greens, Omelets, and "The Mountain" Charlie’s Place has become famous for its wide-ranging menu. From "Charlie’s Greens" (sausage, sundried tomatoes, potatoes, and eggs) to signature omelets like the Philly, there is something for every breakfast lover. And then there is "The Mountain"—a hearty plate of eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, onions, peppers, and home fries.

The lunch options are just as robust, featuring four different types of Reubens and freshly hand-patted burgers.

A Family Affair Karen is quick to credit her success to her hardworking staff and the community that supports her. The diner is a true melting pot where everyone—from Hamilton College students to local retirees—is treated with dignity and respect. You’ll even find Karen’s mother, Charlette, on the staff, always ready to fill your coffee cup just in time.

At Charlie’s Place, "family" is defined as anyone gracious enough to pay a visit.
