The November 2019 cover of Greater Utica Magazine highlights the history of the Utica and Black River Railroad, a vital transportation link that helped shape Central and Northern New York in the 19th century. Incorporated in 1853 as the Black River & Utica Railroad, the line quickly became a key route connecting Utica to the North Country.

The railroad reached Boonville by 1854 and expanded further to Lyons Falls by 1867, opening access to previously remote regions. By linking with the Erie Canal and the New York Central Railroad, the Utica and Black River Railroad played a crucial role in moving goods, people, and resources—especially timber and agricultural products—between the Adirondacks and major markets.

This expansion transformed the regional economy, making Utica a transportation hub and fueling growth in trade, industry, and tourism. The railroad later became an essential corridor for Adirondack travel, contributing to the development of the region as a destination.

The cover image reflects an era when railroads were the lifeblood of American progress, and the Utica and Black River Railroad stood at the center of that transformation for the Mohawk Valley and beyond.
