The May 2022 cover of Greater Utica Magazine highlights the history of Bagg’s Hotel Utica NY, one of the city’s earliest and most important landmarks. Established in 1794 by Moses Bagg near Old Fort Schuyler, the original tavern expanded into a major stopping point for travelers moving through the Mohawk Valley. As Utica developed into a transportation hub, Bagg’s Hotel became known as the “Gateway to the West,” serving stagecoach passengers, railroad travelers, and merchants alike.
Throughout the 19th century, the history of Bagg’s Hotel Utica NY includes hosting notable figures such as Washington Irving, Charles Dickens, General Lafayette, and Presidents including Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln. As the city evolved, the hotel’s prominence declined, and in 1932 it was demolished during the Great Depression. The site was later redeveloped with the Proctor Memorial Building, but the legacy of Bagg’s Hotel remains a key part of Utica’s early growth and identity.
