Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Oneida Square Utica NY featured on Greater Utica Magazine May 2019 cover

The May 2019 cover of Greater Utica Magazine features the Soldiers and Sailors Monument Utica NY, a powerful Civil War memorial located in Oneida Square. Unveiled on October 13, 1891, the monument honors the soldiers from Oneida and Herkimer counties who served during the Civil War.

Designed by sculptor Karl Gerhardt, the monument is constructed of granite and bronze and stands as one of Utica’s most iconic landmarks. At its peak is a symbolic female figure representing the city of Utica, pointing south in tribute to the direction where many soldiers marched to war.

Surrounding the monument are detailed statues representing a soldier, a sailor, and allegorical figures of Victory and Peace, reflecting both the sacrifice and the hope that followed the conflict.

This issue highlights the historical significance of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument Utica NY and its enduring role as a place of remembrance, especially during Memorial Day.
