Historic Mann Building constructed by the Mann Brothers in Downtown Utica NY featured on February 2021 cover

The February 2021 cover of Greater Utica Magazine highlights the history of the Mann Brothers Utica NY, influential figures in the city’s 19th-century business, medical, and civic development.

James F. Mann and Dr. Matthew D. Mann were prominent members of a well-established Utica family whose impact extended across law, real estate, medicine, and commerce. Their father, Charles A. Mann, was a respected real estate attorney and political figure who served in both the New York State Assembly and Senate, helping to establish the family’s strong presence in Utica NY history.

In 1883, the Mann brothers developed the landmark Mann Building at the corner of Genesee and Broad Streets in Bagg’s Square. At seven stories tall, it was considered an early skyscraper and became one of the most modern commercial buildings in Downtown Utica. Equipped with innovations such as the city’s first passenger elevator and steam heat, the building served as a hub for professionals, businesses, and legal offices.

Dr. Matthew D. Mann gained national recognition in 1901 when he was among the physicians who treated President William McKinley after he was shot in Buffalo. His role in that historic event brought attention not only to his medical career but also to Utica’s connection to a pivotal moment in American history.

Meanwhile, the Mann Building itself became a center of influence, housing prominent tenants including future Vice President James Schoolcraft Sherman. The structure symbolized the city’s economic strength and its emergence as a modern business center in the late 19th century.

Although the Mann Building was demolished in the 1970s during urban renewal, the legacy of the Mann brothers remains an important part of Downtown Utica history, reflecting a period of innovation, leadership, and growth in the Mohawk Valley.
