Historic Oneida National Bank building on Genesee Street in Utica NY featured on Greater Utica Magazine December 2019 cover

The December 2019 cover of Greater Utica Magazine features the history of Oneida National Bank Utica NY, a major financial institution that played a central role in the region’s economic development. Chartered in 1865, the bank became a cornerstone of banking in Central New York, serving businesses, industries, and residents during a period of rapid growth.

Located prominently on Genesee Street, Oneida National Bank helped finance the expansion of Utica’s manufacturing, commerce, and infrastructure through the late 19th and 20th centuries. Its presence reflected the city’s strength as a regional economic hub and its connection to broader financial networks.

After more than a century of operation, the bank entered a period of consolidation. In 1985, it was acquired by Norstar Bank, which later became Fleet Bank in 1997. Through continued mergers, it ultimately became part of Bank of America in 2005, marking the end of the Oneida National Bank name but not its lasting impact.

This cover captures a piece of Utica’s financial legacy, reflecting how local institutions helped shape the economic identity of the Mohawk Valley.
