New Century Club building on Genesee Street and Hopper Street in Downtown Utica NY featured on Greater Utica Magazine August 2020 cover

The August 2020 cover of Greater Utica Magazine features the New Century Club Utica NY, a key institution in the women’s suffrage movement located in Downtown Utica at the corner of Genesee Street and Hopper Street.

Founded in 1893, the New Century Club became a powerful force in advancing civic engagement and reform among women in Central New York. At a time when women had limited roles in public life, the club provided a space for education, organization, and leadership.

Situated prominently on Genesee Street, the club’s building served as a hub for activism and discussion. Leaders such as Lucy Carlile Watson worked through organizations like the Political Equality Club to promote voting rights and expand women’s influence in civic affairs.

Utica played an important role in the broader suffrage movement, hosting events such as a visit from Susan B. Anthony in 1894 and the 1912 New York State Woman Suffrage Association Convention. These gatherings helped position the city as a center of suffrage activity in the Mohawk Valley.

Through the work of the New Century Club and its members, women in Utica NY moved from private life into public leadership, contributing to the passage of women’s voting rights in New York State in 1917 and nationally in 1920.

This cover commemorates both the centennial of women’s suffrage and the lasting legacy of the New Century Club Utica NY, a cornerstone of social and political progress in Downtown Utica. progress in the Mohawk Valley.
