The February 2022 cover of Greater Utica Magazine highlights the Clinton Arena rebuild, one of the most remarkable comeback stories in the Mohawk Valley. Originally constructed in 1948–1949, the arena quickly became the heart of hockey in Clinton, earning the village the nickname “Hockeytown” as home to the Clinton Comets. That legacy was nearly lost on September 11, 1953, when a devastating fire destroyed the original structure, threatening to erase a central part of the community’s identity.
Rather than accept the loss, the community rallied immediately to begin the Clinton Arena rebuild, completing the project in just four months. The new arena reopened on January 16, 1954—before construction was fully finished—allowing the Comets to return to the ice and preserving Clinton’s hockey tradition. Built with concrete block construction and a Pennsylvania truss roof, the arena stood stronger than before and later gained national recognition as a filming location for Slap Shot. Today, it remains a lasting symbol of resilience, community pride, and Mohawk Valley sports history.and the enduring importance of hockey in Central New York. The Clinton Arena rebuild remains a defining moment in the region’s history.
