Riverside Mall

The Riverside Mall in Utica, NY, opened in 1974 and became a defining part of Utica history, serving as a major shopping and social hub for Oneida County and the Mohawk Valley. Anchored by Montgomery Ward, Howlands, and J.M. Fields (later replaced by Bradlees), the mall reflected the peak of enclosed retail culture with its modern, climate-controlled design. Shoppers and families were drawn to a wide variety of stores and attractions, including Fun & Fitness, Flah’s, Anderson Little, and the Riverside Mall Cinemas, along with local favorites like Burger King, Pavone’s Pizza, Friar’s In, the Cattleman’s Club, and The Ground Round. Financial institutions such as the Savings Bank of Utica and Key Bank added to its everyday convenience, while specialty shops and national retailers created a complete shopping experience. More than just a mall, it was a true community gathering place, hosting events like Boilermaker Road Race registrations, school performances, and appearances by notable figures. As retail trends shifted, the mall eventually declined and closed, but it remains a lasting symbol of a vibrant era in Utica NY history and a place filled with memories for generations of local residents.
